Coursera Linking and MOOC Completion

Separate registration in Coursera is not required; however, learners who wish to begin work early in a public version of a Massive Online Open Course (MOOC) may register for that MOOC ahead of time. Learners will be automatically enrolled in applicable private sections of Coursera MOOCs on soft launch based on their Illinois registration.

Learners must link their Coursera account and Join Illinois on Coursera before the end of their first course (first 8 weeks). Failure to link within the deadline will result in a failing grade. Several emails will be sent to your Illinois email account by both Coursera and Gies Online if your account is unlinked. Email i-support@illinois.edu if you need confirmation of linking or assistance.

MOOC Completion Policy

Effective starting Fall 2026

Learners must earn the required MOOC completion certificate(s) by the last day of the course. Failure to successfully complete all MOOCs associated with your course will result in a 20% reduction in your final grade. Extensions will not be granted. 

Coursera MOOC completions will appear in the Canvas gradebook within 48 hours of earning the certificate. The instructional team will verify MOOC completions during the grade finalization period.
