Cancellation or Withdrawal

Standard schedules follow the university's official, full-term academic calendar (e.g., 16-week semester), while non-standard schedules operate on unique start and end dates, such as 4-week and 8-week courses. Non-standard courses have unique drop, withdrawal and refund deadlines, whereas standard courses follow the standard academic calendar. The management degrees (iMBA and iMSM) and management certificates follow a non-standard schedule and will have a unique set of deadlines. The specialized degrees (iMSA and MSBAi) and specialized certificates (accountancy) follow the standard schedule and will follow the standard academic calendar.

Cancellation

Cancellation is when a learner registers for courses but decides not to attend the University that term. Cancellations must be submitted no later than one day before the official course start date. No tuition or fees are charged for a cancellation because it means a learner has not started classes that term and has not utilized University resources. The University sees the terms as 16 weeks for fall, spring, and summer. While our courses may only reflect part of the term (8 weeks), we adhere to the University definition of term.

Cancellations can be processed two ways:

Cancellations must be completed no later than one day before the course start date. Cancellation requests submitted via Student Self-Service on or after day 1 will be denied by the Office of the Registrar.

Withdrawal

Withdrawal refers to dropping all courses for the entire term after the first day of instruction. Once a learner has attended a class or used campus services, cancellation is no longer an option, and a withdrawal must be pursued. Refunds for withdrawals are issued on a prorated basis, according to the Course Refund Guide.

To submit a withdrawal:

  • Complete and submit a Withdrawal Form to i-support@illinois.edu.
  • Withdrawal is not available through Student Self-Service
  • For programs on the non-standard schedule (iMBA and iMSM), the Graduate College views withdrawing from first 8 week courses as withdrawing from the entire semester. Students who withdraw from their first 8 week courses will not be permitted to register for second 8 week courses.
  • Cannot withdraw from second 8-week session if any coursework was completed in the first 8 weeks

Medical Withdrawal

Medical Withdrawal is a learner-initiated process that allows a learner to temporarily leave the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign to address a significant physical or mental health condition that significantly impacts their ability to function successfully or safely as a member of the university community. Learners must submit a personal statement, Academic Information form, and relevant medical documentation from a licensed healthcare provider that includes a description of the medical condition, its impact on the learner’s ability to function, treatment plans, and expected outcomes. Requests must be made on or before the last day of courses for the semester and before any final exams are taken. A learner who is already approved for a standard withdrawal of term is not eligible for a medical withdrawal.
