Academic Standing

The Graduate College and academic departments monitor various aspects of the learner’s progress in their degree program. We use Academic Standing to reflect a learner’s progress.

Good Standing

Learners in good standing are making satisfactory progress in all aspects of their degree.

Academic Warning

Learners on academic warning (formerly probation) are not making satisfactory progress in an aspect of their degree. Learners on academic warning will receive a notice from the Graduate College.

Drop Status

Learners on Academic Warning who do not satisfy the requirements described in the notice letter will be placed on Drop Status. Learners on Drop Status are not eligible to enroll or hold any graduate appointment. In this status, students can submit a Graduate Student petition for reinstatement.

Graduate learners must maintain a minimum GPA, specific to each program, and make satisfactory progress to continue as a learner in the Gies College of Business. The iMSM and iMBA degrees, as well each Graduate Certificate program, require cumulative GPA of 2.75 to obtain your credential. The iMSA and MSBAi require a cumulative GPA of 3.0. Each minimum cumulative GPA is stated on the Academic Catalog.

Learners can view their current Academic Standing in Student Self-Service at any time. The Graduate College notifies learners if they are being placed on Academic Warning or Drop Status; however, learners are responsible for regularly checking their own Academic Standing through Student Self-Service. Academic Standing does not appear on the official academic transcript unless a learner has been dropped from the program and not reinstated.

Reinstatement After Academic Dismissal

Learners are dropped from their program when they do not meet the minimum academic standards after two consecutive semesters. To be considered for reinstatement, a learner must submit a Graduate Student Petition, including any relevant information that prevented academic success and what they will change moving forward. Learners should remain active in their current course until a decision is made on their reinstatement petition.

Learners on drop status must submit their “Policy Exception – Reinstatement After Drop Status” petition by the Graduate College deadline. Failure to meet this deadline will result in current courses being cancelled for the semester.
