Holiday Closure: Thanksgiving
The University will be closed Thursday, November 23 and Friday, November 24, to observe the US Thanksgiving Day Holiday. Please refer to your course syllabi for assignment deadlines and live session schedules. University offices will be closed, and responses via email will be limited during this time. We look forward to interacting with you on Monday, November 27 when the University reopens. Please note we will have adjusted express advising hours on Wednesday, November 22 from 10am-12pm and 1-2pm only.

New Podcast: Encountering Imposter Syndrome
When you're in grad school and doing awesome work, it's not uncommon to experience imposter syndrome: doubting your abilities and feeling like a fraud in your work. In this GradLIFE podcast, join Lisa Abston (Assistant Dean for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion here in the Graduate College) and Darrien Watson (fourth-year PhD student in the Department of Recreation, Sport and Tourism) for a discussion ranging from the emotions of graduate study and experiences with feeling like an imposter in academia to practical tips and strategies for keeping your way when imposter syndrome rears its head.
 
New Study Estimates Long-term Health Impact of Air Pollution
According to a new study, wind direction, coupled with the air pollution it brings, can have a significant impact on the length of a person's life. Gies associate professors, Tatyana Derugina and Julian Reif co-authored "The Long-run Effect of Air Pollution on Survival", to measure the relationship between wind direction, sulfur dioxide concentration, and the effects of long term exposure. Closing the Gap--Why Feedback is Essential for Improving AC Disclosures
After studying the accounting scandals that led Enron to bankruptcy, Gies assistant professor, Karneisha Wolfe, along with three other researchers from Virginia Tech and the University of Tennessee, sought to explore how audit committee disclosures have changed and whether there is room for improvement. They explore the answers to these questions and more in their co-authored study "Audit Committee Disclosure Evolution: Evidence From the Field". Read more about the study here.
